The Port of Turku’s next steps are aimed at growth, efficiency and sustainability

The Port of Turku has been undergoing major changes in recent years. We have invested in the future, renewed our operations and built a foundation that will facilitate the next growth phase. Now, it is time to look ahead: our strategy aims at growth, more streamlined operations and sustainable development.

The most visible symbol of our growth is the new passenger terminal, which will completely change the travel experience. Our goal is to provide an even more efficient, comfortable and modern service package for all port users. At the same time, the development of a digital port will bring a new level of flexibility to both passengers and transport operators. Digital services, better access to information and more straightforward processes will make the use of the port more efficient and predictable.

Although the development of the passenger port has been the key focus of many of our projects in recent years, it is now time to turn our gaze even more intently towards the development of the cargo port. The Port of Turku wants to offer more flexible services and better operating conditions to the import and export companies operating in the area.

The construction of the new maintenance hall, which began in June, is a good example of this. The project strengthens the services offered by the cargo port, brings the necessary functions closer to the customers and improves the competitiveness of the entire port. At the same time, we have initiated the long-term comprehensive planning of the Linnanaukko and West Harbour areas. The aim is to ensure that the development of the cargo port also proceeds in a long-term and goal-oriented manner alongside the Ferry Terminal Turku project.

Growth is at the heart of our strategy. Growth is not, however, only generated through new infrastructure or investments. Investments create opportunities, but genuine growth comes from being able to provide added value to our customers’ operations and communicate it effectively.

Marketing plays a key role in this work. The Baltic Ports Organization conference organised in Turku in the autumn offers the Port of Turku an excellent opportunity to showcase the renewed, flexible and efficient port to operators in the Baltic Sea region. The port’s new logo and brand, published in June, will immediately receive widespread visibility. The marketing plan for 2026–2027 aims to ensure that we are interacting with customers more actively at various events, fairs and networking events. We want to present all the possibilities the Port of Turku will be able to offer for business growth and international trade in the future.

Along with growth, safety and sustainability provide strong foundations for our strategy. Safety is a big part of the port’s daily operations and is actively monitored by our Management Team. We have made decisive progress in our carbon neutrality targets and, in particular, in significantly reducing the Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions of our own operations. The already accomplished changes in dredging, energy procurement and vehicles have shown that concrete actions can deliver significant environmental benefits. This work will continue in the same fashion, with purpose and determination, over the years to come.

Our sustainability work continues with regard to the Scope 3 emissions of the services we purchase and provide. Sustainability is reflected in our projects in two ways. First, we are reducing our own consumption and making sustainable choices in all our investments. Secondly, we are developing services that will also help our customers to reduce their environmental impact. Shore power solutions and advanced waste management services reduce the emissions of vessels visiting the port and support the green transition of the entire maritime logistics chain.

The Port of Turku has a strong history, but an even stronger future. We are building a port that facilitates growth, provides first-class service and acts responsibly in terms of both the environment and port customers. Together with our customers, partners and personnel, we are creating a port that will serve the Turku region, Finland and the entire Baltic Sea region even better, now and in the future.
