Ferry Terminal Turku is progressing on schedule
Ferry Terminal Turku marks the opening of a whole new era in traffic between Turku and Stockholm. When the new passenger terminal is completed, Turku’s passenger harbour will be a state-of-the-art maritime centre that meets all the requirements for modern, fast-paced, smooth and safe shipping.
In addition to passenger traffic, Ferry Terminal Turku is an important link for cargo traffic between Finland and Scandinavia that is vital for business. In addition to the terminal designed for the shared use of Tallink Silja and Viking Line, the project is renewing the quay and piers, yard areas and traffic arrangements in the port.
The construction of the new passenger terminal started in January and progressed on schedule throughout the year. Construction began with piling and foundation work, which were completed in March. The actual framework construction was initiated in July and the foundation stone of the joint terminal was laid at the beginning of September. In total, the construction work is estimated to take about two years, i.e. the project will be completed at the beginning of 2027. The main contractor for the terminal, designed by PES-Architects Ltd., is Skanska Oy.
Along with the construction of the terminal building, the project is simultaneously progressing with the construction of quays and piers and the renovation of the yard area. As part of the new Pier S1 undertaking, the main deck ramp was installed at the beginning of November, and the competitive tendering for the refurbishing of Quay S2 is being prepared. Pier S1 is scheduled to be completed in summer 2026 and Quay S2 in 2028. Construction work in the yard area began in September and is being carried out in stages for completion in 2027.
When completed, Ferry Terminal Turku will stand, together with Turku Castle, in the heart of the new Linnaniemi area. The joint terminal, being built in accordance with the winning design from an international architectural competition, will strengthen the maritime identity of the City of Turku and increase the attraction of the Turku region from the point of view of tourism, housing and business life. Thus, Ferry Terminal Turku is helping to build the future of shipping and the City of Turku.
